With the development of modern remote sensing technology, more and more multi-resolution, multi-temporal and multi-spectral remote sensing image data are provided by different kinds of remote sensors. But these remote sensing image data are not same in the different fields because of observation limit and dissimilar design of the remote sensors. To get a more correct, clear and complete knowing about the target, it is urgent for us to find a way to synthesize different kinds of image data , so remote sensing image fusion become hotspot. In the paper, the basic knowledge of image fusion and fusion effect evaluation methods are provided. What's more, some typical remote sensing image fusion methods are discussed, including IHS(Intensify-Hue-Saturation), HPF(High pass Filter), PCA(Principal components analysis) and wavelet analysis. In recent years, wavelet analysis has been applied in image fusion and has achieved great success. On the other hand, multiwavelet is an extension from scalar wavelet, and has several particular advantages in comparison with scalar wavelet on image processing. Multiwavelet analysis can offer a more precise way for image analysis than wavelet analysis. In this paper, we research the characteristics of multiwavelet transform and typical methods of remote sensing multi-source data fusion, and then find a fusion method by means of discrete multiwavelet transform and HIS. By using this image fusion method , we have merged the TM multi-spectral image and SPOT panchromatic image with the different resolution of the same district in the experiment. Comparing with other fusion images methods and evaluating them, we can draw the conclusion that this method can fuse details of input images successfully, and it can perfectly display information of the each input image, therefore using this image fusion method can get more satisfactory result than using others.
