Attention was mainly paid to the application of the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in the field of the logistics management nowadays. Enticed by the huge market, many Multi-National Corporations have invested more capitals into this area, such as IBM, Intel, Philips, TI, and so on. The electronic tag technology in China is in a start-up stage and the development of RFID industry lags behind developed countries. Research on RFID would greatly help break away from the technology forestall of foreign corporations, and definitely accelerate the economic development. However, due to the long period for design, complicated procedure for manufacturing, inconvenience for debug and difficulty for correction, the lag of the hardware exploration has already restricted the further development of the RFID technology in China. Meanwhile, the development of the software design is much quicker and easier, which would well mitigate this conflict.Therefore, a method was systematically investigated in this paper, using software instead of hardware to realize the basic functions of the RFID reader. A RFID virtual instrument system following the ISO/IEC 18000-3 standard Mode 1 protocol was developed, employing some digital signal processing technologies. Functions of the RFID reader were completed by software, such as modulating/demodulating, filtering, encoding/decoding, cyclic redundancy check logic control, etc..The measurement results show that the capability parameters were achieved to fulfill the designation aim, with the bandwidth of 2 MHz, pulse rising time of 1.18 us, falling time of 831.47 ns, center frequency between 250 KHz and 2.7GHz and free duty ratio and modulation accuracy.It is demonstrated to be available when using software instead of hardware to realize the basic functions of a RFID reader. In the future, the RFID technology will be much closer to our daily life along with people's sustained requirements, which would dramatically promote the progress of RFID technology. As a result, it will become a development trend to use software to take place of some distinctive hardware for the sake of carrying out some special functions.
