WiMAX and MPLS are both the highlight issues in the field of broadband networks and communications. More and more researchers focus on them recently.WiMAX is based on wireless metropolitan area networking (WMAN) standards developed by the IEEE 802.16 group. It's one of the best Broadband Wireless Access(BWA) technologies. MPLS takes the advantage of the fast switching technique and the hop by hop forwarding technology in the second and third layers respectively. It can be used to merging the ATM and IP on the backbone networks. The paper tries to introduce the MPLS technique into the WiMAX networks, which can bring us the end-to-end QoS guarantees. We mainly discussed the the QoS Mechanism Based on MPLS in the Wireless MAN and then given a solution of it in this paper.Firstly, the fundamental of WiMAX is represented; the protocol layering and the QoS mechanism in the MAC layer are introduced detailedly.Secondly, the IP QoS technologies such as IntServ, DiffServ and MPLS are covered in the chaper 3, and then the DiffServ over MPLS mechanism is discussed specially. The most important issues are as follow, they are also the author's contributions:(1) The MPLS over WiMAX mechanism is introduced in detail.(2) QoS architecture of the DiffServ model based on MPLS over the WiMAX networks is presented.(3) The NIST WiMAX add-on for NS-2 is introduced, the architecture and internal of the module are depicted. The Service Flow and QoS scheduling are implemented base on the module. Finally, the MPLS over WiMAX mechanism and the QoS architecture have been simulated on the NS-2. As the result, the QoS mechanism based on MPLS in the Wireless MAN represented in this paper is reasonable and useful; they can satisfy the QoS guarantees.
