With the widely application of satellite communication, frequency spectrums become more and more crowded. Major developed countries all regard K band and more upper frequencies' applications as primary content of electrical technology. Power amplifier is the key part of transmitter system, and has numerous applications. In K band, the power combining amplifier technique is used in common nowdays , which is a very effective way to improve output power of a system while output ability of the single power MMIC component is limited. In this paper, circuit combining tenique is used to manufacture K band 2W solid state power amplifier (SSPA). The subject of this paper is derived from the advance research project "Research and Manufacturing of K and Ka Band Parts for Space Application".The performance of power splitter and combiner is the major factor of their combining efficiency. A novel microstrip Wilkinson design is used as the power splitter and combiner of the K band 2W SSPA. Compared to the traditional Wilkinson design, the output/input coupling problems of power splitter and combiner are solved, and hence improve their performance. Moreover, the position of the resistor is easy to place. MMIC chips are used in the drive stage and the power stage of SSPA, and main problems resulting from the small size of chips are solved, such as the fabrication, dissipation, connecting and the manufacturing of the box. Meanwhile, the effect of bondwire connecting on the perfonnance of the circuit can be confirmed by the system simulation. A K band SSPA has been designed, manufactured and tested, achieving a gain of more than 40dB at the frequency range from 18GHz to 19GHz, a saturation output power of more than 2.19W, and an average combining efficiency of about 67.9%. All the specifications can be satisfied with the expected requirements. Finally, the suggestions on further work are presented at the end of this paper.
