The formation of the modern intellectulas in China has close connection with the western culture.Along with the birth of the modern capitalist, a group of persons taking modern publlishing as their career, gathered in the new publication institutions. They shared a common political aspirations and the identical culture desire, and at the same time played an important role in modern society. Based on studying the modern intellectuals of the modern big cities such as ,Shanghai, Beijing and etc, this essay makes a survey of this new emerging occupational groups on the origin, the occupalization, socicial activities, and several other ares.The full text is divided into four parts:The first part described the emerging process of the modern publishing institution, which makes an overview of the modern publishing institution, and makes a specific division of the resource of the group members.This section is divided into three sections.Section 1 elaborated the external and internal conditions of the modern publishing institution. Section II outlined the publication institution set up by the foreign missionaries , the government and the private agencies.Section III reviewed and sorted out composition of the groups in the modern publishing institution.The second part focuses on discussing the career of the modern publishing groups. This section could be divided into four sectioins. Section I introduces that the private publishing companies has formed a certain scale and has established its industry organizations. Section II reveals that the intellectuals who take publishing as its occupation have earned the recoginition by the society. And the group has formed its own group-consciousness. Section III focuses on stating the occupational concept of the group, as well as its impact on the publications.Section IV describes the work , the occupational income, expenditure and professional exchanges of the group, which embodies the characteristics of this group from another sight.The third part analyzes the social relations under the social conditions of that time. Section I discusses its self-contradiction as well as its complex relatiionship with the political circles whcih seems to be close at times, to be irrelevant at times. Section II describes its relationship with a peer.They seem to be like-minded friends, but at the same time they are still the industry competitors, which reveals the brutality of its internal industry.Section III states its relationship with the authors which is so-called money relationship, but at the same time it mingled with something else which is cooperation. Secton IV attracts our attention on discussing its relationship with the readers.As for them , readers are not only the persons whom they are going to influence and change, but also the persons who give them clothes and food.The fourth part discusses the social values of the modern publishing group.This part is divided into four sections. Section one reveals that the modern publishers take the publications as the tools to issue and reflect their political statements.Section II discusses that the reformation made by the publishers accelerated the development of modern publishing enterprises, as well as brought a chain reaction to the recent publication. Section III reveals that the books published by the group, have filled up the national spiritual emptiness of that time, and have chaged the reading habits of the nations. Section IV states that the group realizes their culture desire by advocating reformation.
