With rapid development of integrate circuit, hardware and computer architectures keep changing daily. At the same time, the mode of computer's usage changes enormously as well. Application mode based on network replacing traditional mode based on single computer gradually leads to more and more significance of system installation and disposition which are according to dynamic requirements. As a result, operating systems as the core system softwares are facing large amount of challenges in varieties aspects. One of those challenges is the installation of operating systems. To the performance of an operating system, the most important condition is whether it is accepted by the hardware equipments and application environment which is appointed by users. YH Kylin, an operating system for servers, are developed by the National University of Defense Technology. Although the main aim of this operating system is server flatform rather than more complexity clients' desktop, the adaptation of its installation meet some difficulties because of the lack of a common standard among sorts of manufacturers of CPUs, BIOS, Motherboards and also server-machines. It is necessary to provide a wide-adaptive, strong-capable and multi-method installation subsystem for guaranteeing the installation and usage of the YH Kylin on all kinds of servers. This requirement about the adaptation of our system is also such a direction toward the development of main operating system worldwide. In this paper, by analyzing the concepts and core technologies of installation subsystem in main present operating systems and taking into account of the technological characters and requirements of the YH Kylin, we give the architecture of the YH Kylin installion subsystem which implements hard disk installation and PXE protocol based installation. Furthermore, a method for reconstruction of the linking mechanism of ELF files is provided, so that YH Kylin can be integrated with GRUB and anaconda which are wildly used in the Linux systems. The result of testing and experiments illustrates that the solution given in this paper meet the most requests of installation and deposition in all sorts of servers and network environments with preferable stability and facility.
