The traditional 1D barcode can no longer meet the society's needs because of its limitary information capacity and dependence on the database. With the development of high technology, it is pressed for using bar code to express more information within the limited printing space, which could realize the description for goods. Two-dimensional bar codes appeared just about to meet upwards requirement. So we study on Data Matrix 2D barcode, implement the encoding process and the automatic recognition technology under the image mode. We make great efforts on the recognition technology, with our effort, even the PC video capture has the function of recognition. Compare with developed country, our recognition technology has less cost.In the beginning, this paper implements the encoding process according to the international standard of the Data Matrix. For the recognition technology, we implement it that according to the image mode: One-off collecting of barcode image by taking picture avoid the problems that produced by linear scanner. At the same time, it simplify to the operation of scanning of barcode image. There have four steps on recognition and decoding: First, Pre-process the barcode image, in this step, much of noise in the image can be decreased and the "L" finder pattern can be enhanced also; Then, find the "L" pattern base on a updating least liner approaching algorithm, it can accomplish the location of barcode; Then, build the barcode sampling grid via the same algorithm. This grid may useful to data-reading. Last, decode the data stream by an algorithm which against the encode process.The result shows that the technology presented by this paper can encode and decode correctly. It is according with the international-standard, the system can solve many matters such as: non illumination uniformity and geometry distortion. It also have a high successful rate of recognition, high recognition speed and low cost. So it is worth to use and developed.
