With the popularity of Internet, the influence of network technology has permeated every corner of society, such as working, living and amusement. Because of its effectiveness in network bandwidth utilization, IP multicast technology has rapidly gained its importance. IGMPv3 is one of the most important protocols in IP multicast architecture, however, its logical structure is too complicated for practical applications. In order to solve this problem, Huawei Technologies Co. has proposed a simplified version of IGMPv3 in the "LW-IGMPv3/MLDv2 internet draft", which is analyzed in this thesis. Also, the LW-IGMPv3 has been implemented on the XORP platform, and detailed test of the protocol has been carried out and analyzed.Firstly, the thesis introduces the background of the project briefly, focusing on the research status of IP multicast technology. By analyzing IP multicast architecture, the importance of IGMP is described. Then the thesis compares the pros and cons of every version of IGMP and focuses on the analysis of IGMPv3.Secondly, simplification reasons are presented on the basis of analyzing deeply in LW-IGMPv3/MLDv2 draft. LW-IGMPv3 and IGMPv3 are compared in aspects of message types, protocol procedures, multicast routing protocol interfaces and protocol compatibility. And then the level of simplification is analyzed.On the basis of the above analysis, LW-IGMPv3 is designed and implemented on the XORP platform. In order to evaluate the improvement between LW-IGMPv3 and IGMPv3, thorough tests are conducted, which includes functional test, compatibility test and performance test. The result shows that, LW-IGMPv3 is able to support IP multicast corr(?)y and effectively, and shows good compatibility with older versions (?) IGMP. It is believed that LW-IGMPv3 can greatly improve rout(?) (?)mance in most situations, and is of great significance i(?) optimization of router performance in large-scale IP multicast appl(?)tions.Finally, the (?)jor work during graduate period is summarized and the lacking of this system along with the future solution is presented.
