Steel balls are most significant parts of bearings and the commonly used rolling elements in bearing line. Bearing precision, motility and service life depend on the quality of steel ball in bearing. Steel ball surface defects must be conducted in real steel ball producing process. Currently, manual inspecting is the common inspection practice at home bearing firms and steel ball companies. Manual inspecting are inefficiency and production quality can not be qualified.To resolve above problem, this paper designed mechanism body and related control parts of steel ball surface defects detector. The detector used vision technology to detect surface defects of steel.This thesis described the overall scheme of steel ball surface defects auto-detecting system, design of steel ball expansion mechanism, and motion control sector of mechanism for steel ball surface defects auto-detecting system. This paper builded a mathematical model of steel expansion mechanism, then tested the feasibility of this mechanism and finally designed the mechanism. After that, the design approach for each modules of defects auto-detecting system are detailed. Motion control sector was designed for steel ball surface defects auto-detecting system. NI motion card was adopted as the core parts to accomplish multi-axis control goal. LabVIEW software was used to integrated image, gather data, monitor data, and control mechanical motion. Experimental results show that the designed steel ball surface defects detecting system can automatically detect defects on surface of steel ball.
