Instant Messaging (IM) and Short Message Service (SMS) are both messaging services with features of low cost and real time. And they are becoming more and more popular in NGN. At present, most of instant messaging systems are applied in Internet. However, under the background of service convergence in Next Generation Network (NGN), it becomes a key issue to interconnect IM system in Internet and SMS system in traditional telecommunication network and to integrate IM service and Short Message Services.Based on the analysis of characteristics of IM and SMS and corresponding protocols, a method to solve the difference between IM and SMS by extending SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) messages and message flows is brought forward in this paper. Moreover, a reference design and its implementation are also specified. In this Server converged with SMS and IM, a universal messaging service intermediate protocol is adopted, which shields the difference between IM protocol (SIP) and SMS protocol (Short Message Peer to Peer Protocol/SMPP). At the same time, unified message process unit is utilized to process the universal messaging service intermediate protocol, thus to converge IM processing and SMS processing by accessing both SIP and SMPP and interconnecting them seamlessly. All these make the SMS convergence IM server become an important network element in the process of service convergerence between the Internet and traditional telecommunication network in NGN.
