Due to the huge volume of digital video data, the transmission and store of the digital video require very high transmission bandwidth and very huge capacity. These promoted the application of the video compression coding. Based on diferent applications and different compression technique, many international video compression standards have been established by the international organizations.For different applications, the compression, store and transmission of video data use diferent formats and standards. In general, is the most efficient compression standard. So here I aim at Mpeg-4 compression algorithm.Object-based video coding techniques used in MPEG-4 standard represent the direction of video coding techniques. The video objects in MPEG-4 may be the objects or background in video, so there are three kinds of data about video objects need to be coded: motion, texture, and shape.In the first part of this paper, the status of this technical field was researched. Secondly, the algorithms used in MPEG-4 video compression standard are explored in detail, and we deeply study the algorithms including motion estimation, DCT transform and quantification. Finally, for the sake of compressed video demand in multimedia coursewares, I design a simple video edcoder based on VC++ 6.0 environment.
