The network of Changchun Vocational Institute of Technology does not develop for a long time, but the management of the college network is very important. With the developing of the technology, the size of the network becomes bigger and bigger, the customer of the network becomes more and more. The structure of the network is more complexity than ever before. So the purpose of the network management is to offer a kind of method to managing, designing, operating, running, checking, controlling, evaluating and expending the network. Organizing and using the network resources, offering the suitable, safe and effective server to the customers.With rapid development of network, the size of network becomes larger and larger, the structure also becomes more and more complex and the function of network is stronger. Meanwhile, with the popularization of computer, for a general consumer, the thought of relying on network is stronger and stronger. A secure and useful network system is becoming more and more important. The network management is becoming the key of the network system. Topology discovery for network is a foundation of network management. Yet Knowledge of the up-to-date topology of a TCP/IP network is crucial to a number of critical network management tasks.Network topology reflects a mutual connection between nodes. These nodes mainly are router, switch, net bridge and the terminal. The automatic topology discovery for network is a work that information of network nodes which are discovered is provided on a screen.Network management technology has been developing rapidly since SNMP(Simple Network Management Protocol)was published at the end of 1980s.It has become an essential element in constructing and maintaining networks along with the enhancement of management functions and expanding of managed objects.Aiming at this status, the thesis discusses how to implement the SNMP Management, designs and implements software based on analysis of the SNMP Management functions and its development tools in existence. The software can offer the information of the network equipment which stays at the net to the customers according to effective management. Visiting the MIB of the network equipment, getting the useful value for the customers. The principle of the SNMP and the encoding rules will be introduced in the detail. The thesis is written for the topology discovery for network. Based on the SNMP agreement and the MIB storehouse, the thesis has discussed main algorithms of topology discovery for network and expounded the main thought and plan which is useful to the topology discovery for branch network or subnet and production of topology's figure in the process of topology discovery for network.This paper analyses the problems about IP network management, and points out one of the main cause of them is the lack of automated solutions for discovering the network topology. In the beginning of this, author describe the problems and challenges we face, analyse the standard protocol-SNMP, compare various management technology, then choose SNMP as the basic protocol for campus network software which is suitable for such network and finally implement the software on it. A large part of this article elaborates the result for researching SNMP theory from different aspects such as the development of SNMP,SNMP configuration, MIB, PDU and discuss advantages and disadvantages of different SNMP versions and anaylse the high-security SNMPV3's architecture.Based on the analysis of the existing automatic topology discovery techniques, this paper presents a topology discovery algorithm for heterogeneous TCP/IP networks using standard SNMP MIBs. Our algorithm makes use of the topology configuration information in routers, switches and hosts under the situation that do not generate traffic in the network in advance, to determine the interconnection between directly connected peers in a network, to produce the IP-level and link-level topology map. We have tested our approach in our internal network and we verified the result, it has accurately etermined the topology of several different networks using a variety of hardware and network configurations. We present a SNMP-based topology discovery algorithm using direct connection theorem and simple connection theorem for judging relationship of switches in subnets. In order to in discover the map of network without SNMP, several key problems such as subnet guessing are discussed in details. And then a topology discovery algorithm based on primitive protocols is presented. We also deeply study some protocols and propose a routing-protocols-based algorithm for topology discovery. A visualization method, which applies to the display of the topology, was proposed. It visualized the topology based on hierarchical structure with the major devices being separated from the minor devices in the different hierarchy. The major devices were hierarchically displayed on screen from top to bottom.This system is based on the SNMP++ software. The SNMP++ software is belong to the HP company. It offer the interfaces to develop the SNMP application software. It can use the min of the MIB and make the developing easier. After the introduction of SNMP management framework and related technology to the platform implementation, the thesis analyzes the architecture of SNMP management software in detail and introduces the functions and implementations of all compositive modules entirely. The basic concept and important techniques in implementing the method were presented.We have tested our approach in our internal network and we verified the result, it has accurately determined the topology of several different networks using a variety of hardware and network configurations. The new topology discovery algorithm proved to be a reasonable choice to reach a rapid and accurate detection in the internal network of our institute, thus to provide a dependable terrace for network management.At last it summarizes the research work and presents some prospects on the project.
