The mobile speed, or equivalently, the maximum Doppler shift is very useful information in wireless communication systems. It is essential for the control of resource management, handover and the optimization of receiver algorithms. Speed estimation in wireless communication systems is mainly studied in this paper.Fading statistics of mobile channel are often used for speed estimation. These statistics, including fading rate, level crossing rate and average fade duration are illustrated in this paper firstly. Then modeling and simulation of wireless channel is described. Three typical methods for the maximum Doppler frequency estimation, including level crossing rate, covariance function and average fade slope duration are presented, their performances are also analyzed. Based on the analysis of typical speed estimation methods, a method using the forth and sixth order moments of power spectrum to estimate speed is proposed. Simulation results show that this method has a good performance of speed estimation and is robust to noise and scattering.
