Chinese ink-painting is the typical of Oriental Art, whereas the current complicated technologies for creating 3D Chinese ink-style animation make against the spread of this traditional culture. If we can make use of existing Chinese ink-paintings to produce ink-style purpose rapidly, the embarrassing situation will be broken. Based on both image processing and analysis and Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR) technique, this paper proposes an artistic style translation algorithm. With a Chinese ink-painting and a 3D model as inputs, the algorithm can render the 3D model to produce a result image similar to the source painting's ink-style.The proposed algorithm is composed of three parts: image pre-processing, analysis and extraction of the Chinese ink-painting's artistic features and feature-based 3D Chinese ink-style rendering. By in-depth analysis on different artistic styles among different Chinese ink-paintings, we divide an object's style into two aspects - contour features and interior features. In the part of image pre-processing, we combine the seedless region growing method with a region merging method to segment the source painting. By improving the criteria of region merging and termination condition, we speed up the merging process and get a better segmentation result. After objects extraction process, we separate the contour and interior regions of an object, according to the boundary of the object and the shape of the regions. In the second part, for the contour and interior thin regions, we introduce a method for extracting regular texture samples to record the width and texture variation along the region's skeleton. For other interior regions, we analyze the gray histogram to infer their ink information. In the third part, we present the specific methods to generate mapping texture and mapping rules using the extracted artistic features and the surface features on a 3D model. Then we render the silhouettes and creases of the 3D model with texture mapping technique, which avoids the complexity of virtual-brush. Based on the extracted ink information and the histogram of the model's Gouraud-shading image, we design an ink mapping method to complete the interior rendering of the 3D model, which can reveal the source painting's ink feature to some extent. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithm can transfer the artistic style of simple Chinese ink-paintings to a 3D model effectively with maintaining the style coherence between the rendering result and the source painting. The research provides a new way to reuse an existing Chinese painting's artistic style in rapid 3D Chinese ink-style rendering. |
