In the development course of design, culture plays an important role in design. Different historical periods and different culture contributes to many different styles of design. Culture is not only the source of symbolic significance and the spiritual connotations of products, but also the very foundation of a national design style. Because of the characteristics of culture and its'influence on the main body, designers should take the culture as the the most valuable point of reference to understand consumer's needs and design products in the context of the local cultural background. On the other hand, the function of design express and the requirements of design communication fully show that design expressing or conveying culture. But how design can express culture, that is to say; how the native culture can be applied to product design that has been a significant challenge in design, that also been an aspiration of each local designers with a sense of responsibility. To establish the Chinese "Design words" or have our own "culture of character" means to endow the design with native culture. And understanding and using of our national culture in design and forming our own unique design style that's exactly the localization of design.There are mainly two big parts in my study. The first part of this article focuses on the relationship and interaction between the culture and design, that is the description of the source of symbolic significance of products; and the latter part cited many corresponding instances to demonstrate how the native culture can be applied to product design. In order to update on the narrow understanding of national culture, this study also explained and defined the native culture from its contemporary composition. The paper choose mobile phone, the technology products with typical characteristics of the times, as a research vehicle, linked the contemporary pop culture phenomenon and cell phone design together, and reviewed and analyzed the many cases, then summed up the three methods to express or "visualization" the national culture in mobile phone design: conventional symbols (artistic expression), theme (literary expression) and image contransposition (commercial expression), and indicated that the application of these three methods is based on the in-depth understanding of our national culture.
