Abstract/Summary:
The popularity of network and the violent increasment of modern information bring forward higher demands on capacity, bandwidth, response time, and scalability of storage system. So, NAS (Network Attached Storage), SAN (Storage Area Network) and other network storage architecture were proposed and implemented, which improves the performance of the storage system.The most important part in storage system is the storage protocol which impacts performance deeply. Today, Fibre Channel is designed to meet the requirements of SAN in high performance network environments. However, this technology is expensive and complex, and is not practicable to be deployed for low-end users. On the other hand, the traditional method for networking storage over Ethernet is to use an IP-based protocol such as iSCSI (internet Small Computer System Interface). Although TCP/IP works well that it provides both flow and congestion control mechanism, but in LAN environment, it can't achieve higher transport performance because the complexity of TCP/IP protocol will be the burden.Consequently, on VI (Virtual Interface) architecture, vSCSI (VI-attached SCSI) is designed to further address the simplicity and efficiency for transporting large amount of data by processing SCSI standard storage interface protocol. We study the feasibility of using VI to take place TCP/IP transporting data to improve transmission and I/O performance and scalability for storage applications. vSCSI can concurrent processing one SCSI command among many Targets by allowing one Initiator connect to many Targets according to data layout rules, and implement encryption/decryption without losing transmission performance. In average, vSCSI performs better than iSCSI by 115.12% in the way of sequence write and 35.02% in sequence read.
