The hierarchical and distributed network management system is proposed to be an important network management mode considering the feature of a wireless Ad hoc network. The most marked characteristic of this mode is that the architecture of the management is composed by three layers: Manager, Cluster Head and Agent. Each node in the network is managed by the Agent, and several Agents comprise a cluster. Cluster Heads monitor the Agents belong to them, while all the Cluster Heads are managed by the Manager. This mode of management assigns the duties from the Manager to the Cluster Heads and Agents, so it can alliveate the network overhead and make the network management more efficient. The Cluster Head Delegation mechanism is the part of work of clusting, and it is an essential part of the implementation of the hierarchical and distributed network management system. This mechanism includes cluster head delegation and exemption and the dynamic assignment of the management tasks. In this thesis, we firstly analyze the basic theories of network management and the hierarchical and distributed network management system. Then we discuss the architecture of this hierarchical and distributed network management system. As mentioned above, a Cluster Management MIB and a Script MIB are designed. Then we implement this mechanism by net-snmp. At the end of the thesis, we test and demonstrate this mechanism sccessfully on a real wireless Ad hoc network test-bed, which is running on Linux operating systems.
