With the rapid development of Internet Technology and the ever increasing speed of network traffic and bandwidth, our daily lives are more and more dependent on networks. But in the same time, varied kind of relative problems had come along such as worm virus and network traffic congestion. To better understand and solve these problems, people have to know details of much traffic transformed in net, which is just the essence of network traffic measurement. In some situations, people want to simulate network in experiment in an effort to analyze problem, which is the task of network traffic simulation. As for the high speed and huge volume of network package in our measurement and simulation, general CPU based applications usually fail to reach desirable performance. If we take advantage of network processor that is optimized for network applications, its performance could undoubltly be greatly enhanced. IXP425 processor produced by INTEL Corporation is just that kind of processor. This paper in the first place give relative background knowledge about network traffic measurement and simulation as well as some main previous solutions, which is followed by detailed discussion and analysis of a IXP425 based network package capture and simulation system using libpcap and libnet library. The system can capture packages according to user requirement and generate specific network traffic like Poisson distributed or self-simulated flow. In design of this system, a new storage structure for captured flow is put forward that could reduce time cost in search and store procedure. Later important details and problem while building this system is discussed. In the last, experiment result and evaluation is given.
