As the rapid development on the market of the China software outsourcing, the developing and testing projects on the Mainframe for Europe, America and Japan are crashing into China largely. The Mainframe is now widely applied in the data centers of governments, banks and insurance agents, as the result, the quality of the software running on the Mainframe impacts on the stability of the whole industry. So, how to test those software in a more efficient and accurate way has long been a hot spot.Advantages and shortages of five normal script techniques were analyzed after studying the key techniques of software testing automation like the capture/reply technique and the script technique. And four classical automatic testing frames were introduced briefly, including the Test Script Modularity Framework, the Test Library Architecture Framework, the Keyword-Driven Testing Framework and the Data-Driven Testing Framework. The IBM mainframe was explained in detail, as well, the properties of the mainframe based software testing were summarized. The demands of the testing automation for the mainframe software were analyzed based on the object, the usability, the function and the interface.As parsing a classical key driving test model thorough, I improved the model, expounded the improving method and gave out the testing automation model suited for the mainframe based software testing. According to the model presented, the design of the automation testing tools for the mainframe based software were explicated from three points, which were the entire structure, the function and the interface.On the design of the automation testing tools, the system environment for the running the tools was explained, while how to apply all the functions of the tools was particularized further. At last, through practicing the actual testing project on mainframe, I compared the automation testing tools studied here with the manual testing on the efficiency, the reliability and the functionality, and evaluated the properties of these tools.
