James W. Carey is a famous communication scientist and cultural historian. He formed his ideology of communicational culture study on an inventive perspective of culture. The object of this paper is the communication ideology of Carey on the perspective of cultural study and this paper emphasis on the theory origin and main content of Carey's communication ideology in order to analyze it.There are three theory origins of Carey's communication ideology: the starting point of Carey's communication ideology is the communication sociology of early Chicago School represent as Dewey; Innis and McLuhan's technological theory enlightened him to contact the media with culture; Clifford Geertz's "thick description" helped Carey to pursue interpretation in methodology.The paper analysis the communication ideology of Carey on the perspective of cultural study in three parts: communication and culture; technology and culture; journalism education and culture. The main contents of Carey's communication ideology are the analysis of communication and communication technology on the perspective of culture and the criticism and think on the American journalism education.It provided a new pattern for the American communication study because Carey studies the communication on the perspective of culture. Carey's thoughts on the essence of communication and his methodology on communicational culture also enlightened our communication study. |
