Frequency spectrum is a limited and valuable resource for wireless communication. A good example can be observed among network operators all over the world for the prices to pay for UMTS-frequency bands. Therefore the first goals when designing future wireless communication systems (4th generation) are to increase the spectral efficiency and to enable an efficient modulation and coding techniques.Multi-carrier and spread spectrum systems are more suitable for this requirement as they provide higher spectral flexibility, higher transmission rates, and frequency usage efficiency. This thesis focuses on the comparison of two multi-carrier and spread spectrum techniques namely: MC-CDMA AND MC-DS-CDMA. We give brief introductions to OFDM and spread spectrum techniques in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 respectively. We then analyze the concepts of Multi-Carrier Spread Spectrum techniques namely MC-CDMA and MC-DS-CDMA in chapter 4. In chapter 5, we use Matlab/Simulink to compare the performances in terms of BER (Bit Error Rate) and spectral efficiency of MC-CDMA (downlink) and MC-DS-CDMA (uplink) in single-user and multi-user detection strategies in a mobile communicationIn Chapter 6, we conclude that MC-CDMA is a good candidate for the downlink of a cellular system while MC-DS-CDMA is more appropriate for the uplink of a multi-user system.
