Virtual plants are using virtual reality technology in the computer to simulate the plants' growth and development process on three-dimension spaces, which have the function of visualization. Research on virtual plants roots is an important component of the virtual plants. People have done a lot of work, construct all kinds of model, bring forward some simulation algorithm, and have material application to lots of aspects. However, these plants roots growth models are always simulation on the degree of computer graphics. They take little into account plants roots growth and development process. Because of root growth and development process is affected by many factors, up to a computer simulation of the real process of plant root growth is still very complex and difficult. Therefore, how to construct model of plants roots, and combine their morphological and structural model with their physiological and ecological model are the emphases of roots model research. In this paper, firstly it deeply analyses the current status of virtual plant research at home and abroad, and introduces computer graphics theory, artificial life theory and fractal theory related to simulation of virtual plant roots. Secondly, it analyses and studies dual-scale automata, L system and so on important virtual plants modeling methods, and makes some improvement on dual-scale automata model. Thirdly, it combines improved dual-scale automata model with L system model to construct the morphological and structural model of wheat roots. Finally, based on method of artificial life, it analyses and studies physiological function of wheat roots growth, takes into account soil moisture and roots geotropism etc. influential factors on the roots growth. It constructs a constraint model of roots growth, and combines it with roots morphological and structural model. Consequently it achieves a better simulation of wheat roots growth.
