Through the introduction of image intensifier operational life and its definition, this paper analyses and describes the importance of this process parameter test and the similarities and differences between traditional life test and operational life test are discussed by analysis and comparison of them. In this paper the photocathode and micro channel plate, the two key factors affecting image intensifier operational life, are also analyzed in detail and are listed the life test methods in night vision industry industry, especially the accelerated test methods adopted in China and abroad at present. This paper provides one accelerated life test method by applying stress multi-times affecting the photocathode most under the precondition of maintaining image intensifier's cathode sensitivity in order to reduce operational life test time and then minimize production time and assure delivery progress. This test method is developed with the reference of accelerated life test and operational life test in China and abroad, combining the rich experience accumulated in Gen II image intensifier production test during last twenty years, especially for super-Gen II. By collecting and analyzing the great deal of operational life test data with super-Gen II image intensifier and the data from customers' feedback, it proves that the accelerated operation life test with employed stress level do not affect the high quality of products and be able to help screen and eliminate scrap products with short life in early production stage. Therefore it concludes that the accelerated operational life test method employed with super-Gen II image intensifier described in this paper is effective to our production process.
