Smart antenna as one of the core technologies in 3G has become the research focus of mobile communication field, because it has lots of advantages. In the coming 3G age, space distribution of the signal in zonal network is restricted in certain scale. In order to adapt to this trend, linear array is used to design smart antenna which is suitable for zonal network base station. In this paper, firstly uniform linear array pattern function is analyzed. From the analysis, the characteristic that in zonal network, mainlobe's width of a uniform linear array can avoid signal's direction of arrival's width excess in cellular network is discovered. At the same time, uniform linear array pattern is compared with uniform circular array. From the comparison, the conclusion that linear array should be used in zonal network base station is arrived. Secondly, nonuniform linear array is discussed in detail. Restricted minimum redundancy linear array and optimum Golomb Rulers is used to rearrange uniform linear array. By this rearrangement, elements number and cost are reduced. At the same time, better resolution and smaller mainlode width of pattern are gotten. At last, the conclusion that redundancy of the linear array can be judged by difference triangle is arrived.Linear array beam can not scan [-Ï€,Ï€] in horizontal and when the direction deviatesnormal, the mainlobe width of the pattern will widen. The emulation result shows that the above shortcomings can be avoided by adopting linear array in mobile communication zonal network base station. Zonal network base station antenna which adopt restricted minimum redundancy linear array and Optimum Golomb Rulers can result in the increase of sidelobe. But it won't affect beam direction. And it can also achieve smaller mainlobe width. For these reasons, the two nonuniform linear array antennas can be used in mobile communication zonal network station.
