With the development of computer technology and user needs' changes arising from the development, a personal-centric computing environment is required. And to address the problem that local system backup and recovery technology can not be used to restore the system fast enough, we have had a remote system backup and recovery requirement. The key techniques for the realization of these requirements are operating system's remote boot technology.Traditional technologies to boot operating system remotely which are based on network file system can not be used in the current widely-used Windows operating system. To address the Windows remote boot problems, people bring forward remote boot technology based on network storage protocol. This paper illustrate that there are many shortages of the technology based on network storage protocol compared with the technology based on network file system from the view of server management. Therefore, this paper proposes a series of methods, making remote boot technology based on network file system can be applied to Windows. This paper analyzes the local Windows boot process firstly, pointing out that all of the hard disk access of the process. And then the principle and boot process of Windows remote boot technology based on network file system are presented detailedly. In order to achieve the proposed technology, we have designed and implemented a network file access protocol SNFS. SNFS is simple, and is optimizated especially for application of Windows remote boot, including file access mechanisms such as access by name, open asynchronous. Finally, we prove the remote boot starting feasibility based on network file system in Windows Server 2003.
