Wireless local area networks (WLANs) have been rapidly developed in recent years for various applications. VoWLAN, which transmits VoIP data over WLANs, shows its amazing attraction and constitutes one of the most flourishing applications nowadays in WLANs.How to improve the capacity while providing QoS of VoWLAN is a big concern for network planners. In this paper, we mainly discuss the issue of the capacity and delay of VoIP over WLAN, and propose a joint optimization solution to improve the capacity with a low delay. By using frame enqueue rear-end aggregation, the MAC framing overhead can be reduced, and by introducing the device priority configuration, we can deal with the uplink and downlink asymmetry.Simulations prove that our scheme can improve the capacity of VoIP over WLAN to 24 in 100ms delay compared with 6 in the traditional WLAN based on IEEE 802.11b. We also implement it in the wifi device driver and set up a platform to prove it. The result also shows the capacity has been improved. |
