A non-contact automatic length cutting system was studied. The system makes full use of image processing technology (non-contact) to test the length of hot billets online and control the cutting machine to detect and cut hot billets automatically. It can show the running status and speed, also catch the image information gathered from a long distance by color cameras.Since the system uses dedicated high-resolution cameras and image processing modules, according to the spectral and shape properties, the length billet camera monitoring system established mathematical models of the characteristics of billet images and effects of different edge detection operator applied to test steel head position in collected images. At the same time, after comparing different effects of the test results by different pretreatment, the final choice was binarization before canny edge detection operator, which follows the dynamic steel track more accurately.In addition, as a leading identification and tracking technology, speed measurement system has also reached a high level. System gets the speed of the billet, and by comparing with a forecast billet casting speed, it can adjust parameters directly. By doing this, the accuracy of system improved, and its accuracy can be as well as inverters.
