Wireless Sensor Network (WNS) is a new technology developed in recent years, the earliest application is in military area. Nowadays, WSN even can be applied in space exploration, radiation detection, flooding precaution, farmland management, biology community observation, mobile target tracking, environment and meteorological monitoring, intelligent transportation, and intelligent home automation system, etc. WSN fuse many current hot technologies such as sensor technology, embedded technology, and network communication technology, etc. Its development has been written in National Guideline on Medium and Long Term Program for Science and Technology Development (2006-2020) by State Council. WSN is walking up to us nearer and nearer.WSN for intelligent district is researched in this paper, and a lot of work is made to resolve the problems in the application of WSN routing protocol for intelligent district. There are three aspects of work in research:(1)Firstly summarizing and analyzing the characteristics and requirements of designing WSN routing protocols, all routing protocols existed are classified, then the working progress and application environment of a few classic routing protocols are studied.(2)This paper researches the working principle and propagation mechanism of the directed diffusion (DD) and simulates it by using NS2. The author chooses three metrics to analyze the performance of DD: the average dissipated energy, the average delay and the average delivery ratio. To carry out series of simulation experiments, the author changes the parameters respectively: the number of network nodes, the number of source nodes and the number of sink nodes. By analyzing the results of the simulation, the paper point out that DD is still difficult to meet the intelligent district, though it shows a good performance.(3)An improved WSN routing protocol for intelligent district which based on energy and passive clustering is proposed. Energy threshold is used in cluster selection, and residual energy is used in gateway selection; an improved algorithm which based on energy and return time is presented; the method of re-selection of cluster or gateway is used for maintaining the network topology. The simulation results indicate that this protocol can improve the energy efficiency of the network, obtain a better performance of delay and higher rates of the groups receive, so it can be applied in the intelligent district.
