Study On Transitivity System Of Case Report In Legal Journalism

The purpose of this article is to firstly reveal different kinds of case reports having their own Communicative Functions in the communication process and then reveal the social ideological meaning that deeply rooted in the case reports. The case report of legal journalism is this article's research object. And, Transitivity of Functional Grammar is this article's analysis method.We concentrate our research on the investigation of main processes of transitivity(including material process, mental process, relational process and verbal process),participant and circumstantial elements in the case report.The article divides into three parts:theory and method, analysis of sample and questions and discussion.Chapter one is theory and method, which introduces discourse theory of Critical Discourse Analysis, Register theory of Functional Linguistics and analysis method of this article-----Transitivity of Functional Grammar. Then, we put forward five analysis steps to do the research:observation, interpretation, description, explanation and evaluation.Chapter two is analysis of sample. In this part, we firstly have a total description and interpretation of the case reports through quantitative analysis on the distribution of processes, participant and circumstantial elements. Then, according to the "mathematical expectancy" that exists in the probability theory and statistics, we choose two case reports as representatives for criminal case report and civil case report to do the case analysis, and try to find the different transitivity features between them. Lastly, this article attaches great importance to the mental process being used by the court in the case report.Chapter three is questions and discussion. In this part, we try to give an explanation on the different features that two kinds of case reports having, and explore how the media discourse influence the formation of audience's individual ideology and then make further efforts to build the concept of social value. In the end, we come to two conclusions: Firstly, in the communication process, the criminal case report focuses on achieving "warning and caution" function;the civil case report focuses on achieving "law popularization and right protection" function.Secondly, the real purpose of the communication of case report is to impose the social ideology on the individuals in order to make the people identify with state power and then internalize the law to make it become the lifeway of themselves and society.
