The research on infrared radiation characteristics of the targets and backgroundshave following important applications: to supply the theory foundation in the design,development and use of IR system; to supply many valuable foundational data for thedetection and recognition of targets; to supply the basic feature for reconnaissance andcamouflage of the important equipment; to supply the physical characteristic andmathematical model for IR simulation; to supply the quantitative parameter and effectevaluation for the anchoret design. This research is also be widely used in theprospecting of mineral, estimation of yield and inspection of plant diseases and insectpests by used remote sensing methods.The infrared radiation characteristics of the oil tank is studied in this paper. Thetheoretical calculations models are derived. From the geometric model of the oil tank,we divide the model into a two-dimensional grid of blocks. The size, space coordinates,distance of each unit, touch area of each unit and normal vector of each unit areobtained.Based on the theory of infrared radiation and heat transfer, we found the heatbalance equations of each unit with consideration of radiation from the sun, theradiation from the earth reflected the sun, the radiation from the air and the earth, theradiation from surface of the oil tank, the heat exchange between the oil tank and the oil,heat exchange of each unit of the oil tank. From an example of the oil tank, we get thetemperature distribution on surface of the oil tank in anytime. So that we supply atheoretical basis and basic data for the research of infrared radiation of the oil tank.
