In the modern economic system and market conditions, best-sellers is not only a product of the publishing industry marketing, but also the driving force to promote the publishing market and scale operation becoming bigger and stronger. Meanwhile, the best-selling book become an important source of profits to the press on account of the due to the cut-throat competition of book market. However, the publishing units to achieve the success of best-selling book is a complex and risky work, even in the global book industry, to make best-seller books a hit are rare, let alone the level of the book market in China which is not high enough and the best-selling book operating mechanisms are not mature, so the successful operation of the best-selling book is not easy. Therefore, how to successfully build the best sellers gradually become the research topic to publishing units and publishing academics.This paper analyzed in detail of the 9-year comprehensive bestseller list, and summarized the basic characteristics of best sellers of bestsellers top list from 2000 to 2008 in China mainland using the sociology, the book publishing, communication, consumer psychology, marketing and other fields of knowledge. From a sociological point of view, the best-selling book not only belong to both the general social circulation of goods and a social and cultural product, but also is a social popular culture and popular culture material, so the best-selling book have a clear social characteristics, such as timing, the public, symbols and other non-rational nature. From the view of Book Publishing, the best-sellers differed from the non-selling books in the subject, text, packaging and marketing topics from planning to final sales. Judging from the longitudinal changes of the times, our best sellers in the true sense are the product of the market in the book publishing industry after the reform and opening up. Therefore, this article does a comparison between best sellers from the 1980s to 1990s and with best-selling book in the century. Finally, analysis of the characteristics of the best sellers are summarized and briefly talked about the development trend of best-selling book, for the best-selling book publishing unit of planning reference.This paper is divided into five chapters: Chapter I, Introduction, a general introduction to this study as well as best-selling book overall, and reviews relevant research; the second chapter, the Chinese book industry status and best sellers of rise and development; Chapter 3, analysis of China's best sellers list from 2000 to 2008;The fourth chapter, the analysis of the basic characteristics of best sellers book in mainland China; the fifth chapter, the study concluded.
