With the development of 3G network, the convergence of Internet and mobile communication network becomes the trend. To achieve the convergence, there is a solution using Home NodeB (HNB), which locates in home and offices. It transfers user data to Home NodeB Gateway (HNB GW) in the mobile network through IP network by remote access method. However, when the data is passing the Internet, the limited bandwidth or other limitation may cause blocking data, extending the transfer time or even discarding data. All these will decrease the quality of HNB communication and the users may have bad experience.In order to increase the quality of HNB communication, we need to discover the problems in the communication links and report the problems to those concerned. In this thesis, we promote two methods to monitor the communication link, which are network management system (NMS) monitoring and IP layer monitoring. In NMS monitoring, there is a system including four units, which are information extraction unit, analysis unit, judgment unit and storage unit. Information extraction unit can collect data of user plane and control plane both in HNB NMS and in HNB GW NMS. Then analysis unit sort these data and compute some rates. Judgment unit compares data in both sides and judge the problems about the links form the comparation results. IP layer monitoring is a method that uses packet loss rate to measure the quality of the links. Through Winpcap we can get the packets in IP layer. And then we analyze the header of IP packets and ESP packets, from which we can get the quantity of sent packets by HNB and received packets by HNB GW, finally is the formula of packet loss rate. In the simulation part, the thesis focuses on realization of packet loss rate. This part mainly introduces the environment of simulation experiment and the data structures and classes used to realize the packet loss rate algorithm, such as class for analyzing the data packet file, class for managing the data storage tables, and class for managing the ESP and IKE data.NMS monitoring method collects data in application layer. It can monitor the links in a long time. While IP layer monitoring data in network layer and it can monitor the links in real time. So these two methods can complement mutually and work together to discover the problems of the links in time. Finally the quality of the links can be guaranteed and the users will have better HNB communication.
