Currently, H.264 is a hot research field of image coding. It has great improved in language structure, prediction algorithms, data transformation and more advanced than before standard in the aspects of low bit rate transmission, high-resolution display and Internet access,which made H.264 image coding standard popular in video conferencing, video on demand, digital TV and handheld video applications. H.264 is more progress than befores standards by increasing computational complexity. Especially for the intra prediction and inter prediction, it has a high coding complexity and lot of computation,which need high performance processor.And only DSP and other powerful processor can work well.Now HD video is popular,but the high profile encoder can not work well in DSP.Because of lots of IO port,running fast, low power consumption, running in parallel and lot of free IP core,FPGA can deal with complex logic.H.264 encoder running in FPGA is better than running in DSP,and can encode HD and real-time vedio.Now logic cells of FPGA is larger and larger,and price is cheaper and cheaper.More and more people who work on vedio processing focus on designing products in FPGA.This paper focuses on analysising features,modes and algorithms of intra prediction of H.264,and discuses feasibility and superiority of implementing H.264 encoder in FPGA.There are two IP cores of intra prediction:4x4 luma prediction mode and 8x8 chroma prediction modules.Then,a SOPC platform with the core of PowerPC 405 processor is designed on XUP Virtex-II Pro development board,and synthesize and test the two modules on this board,and analysis the synthesizing and testing result.Experiments show that the two intra prediction modules can encode vedio of baseline profile in H.264 standard.The results can help the later study on implementing the whole H.264 encoder and provide experience for optimization and improvement of H.264 encoder.
