| As one of the most prestigious economists, Haberler has made vast and deep fundamentalcontributions to many fields of economics. However, there has yet no comprehensive appreciationto his economic standings, and even no such research in China. Therefore, it is meant to provide apreliminary synthesis of Haberler's academic contributions in this essay to cover the research gapin China.In this thesis, Haberler's viewpoints are summarized from three main aspects: international tradetheories and policies, monetary theories and policies, and macroeconomics, and then an objectiveappreciation of his academic status and international prestige is provided. This thesis is arrangedas follows: Firstly, an introduction to his Theory of Opportunity Cost. Haberler originated theemployment of graphical method to analyze the basis and benefits of international trade, and hegave a renewed explanation to Ricardo's Theory of Comparative Advantage. Secondly, anappreciation of free trade policies proclaimed by Haberler and argument with Prebisch overTheory of Deterioration of Terms of Trade. Thirdly, a report together with other six economistsafter a long time of deep research on how to efficiently develop the multilateral trade system.Fourthly, a critique of floating exchange rate policy favored by Haberler. Fifthly, a comprehensivereview of most kinds of business cycle theories. Lastly, an introduction of his views againstKeynesian inflation policy to improve employment.The second part of this essay is the meaning of Haberler's theories to our foreign trade structure,strategies and business cycle in China. Firstly, Haberler's Opportunity Cost Theory and ourpresent foreign trade structure. Secondly, an analysis combining Haberler's free trade policy andforeign trade structure of China. Thirdly, Haberler's business cycle theory and business cycle andfluctuations in China. Having taken China's practical situations, some policy recommendations areput forward. |
