Mapping animal behavior is key to habitat design. Functional urban habitat designshould be built on understanding behavioral process of small mammals and itsinfluencing factors in built environment. However, few studies have addressed therelationship between urban animal behavior and habitats. We used2translocatedfemale hedgehogs in campus of Nankai University and tracked the movement forsuccessive13nights using direct-observation technique in2012. Usinghigh-resolution land cover map and movement locations, we analyzed movementrange, land cover preference, edge use to explore the movement patterns andinfluencing factors. We find that edge of buildings is their favorite, whichsignificantly attracts and leads them on movement. They like shrub-grass, yards andwasteland better than grass and arbor-grass, but avoid roads and squares. Shelteredand enclosed space would increase the preference and edge exerts significantinfluence on land cover preference. Food availability, safe space and mobileefficiency basically constitute the dominant factors of habitat use in built environmentand mode of relationship of typical behavior and space is constructed. And I devisetactics and design on spatial reconfigurations in order to promote crossing matrix anduse habitat effectively for hedgehogs upon their movement and sense. Then usingedge, enclosure, passages&holes and slope, I construct taxonomy on design languishof buildings, structures, organic, water and else to translate behavior to space.A research design is developed to create and present configuration of hedgehogcorridor applying behavior-space design languish. Using prototype I construct aground mesh to make human and hedgehog coexist in Zhongtang and XueweitaiVillage in Dagang. Rhombus mesh based on sense range of hedgehog guaranteesorientation and secure in migration on spatial pattern. Migration infrastructure whichhelps hedgehogs migrate and provide sheltered space constists short walls, steps andhedgerows featured in strong edges. Distribution of human activity and weak edge aredetermined by vegetation space in patches in corridor. Tessellation block with goodpermeability in corridor and high-density block beside corridor are designed based onmesh and space of first-floor are specially designed to create inclusive human-hedgehog interface. This design systematically provides general method ofspatial configuration of designing corridor.
