We provide a novel pattern for the description of the prolate-oblate shape phase transition in the interacting boson model through coupling the SU(3) term with SU(3) term in a linear form. The transitional behaviors of the typical quantities including the excited energy levels and E2transitional rates etc are investigated in detail and systematically compared with those in the original scheme. Finally, the new shape phase transitional pattern is applied to describe the structural evolution in the Pt, Os region.
