Buffering is an effective method to solve the packet contention in optical domain without the conversion of’optical-electronic-optical’ and all-optical buffer becomes the key component in optical switching node.Based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), a single optical buffer loop theoretically and experimentally demonstrated its switch capability to implement all-optical time slot interchange (TSI) on multiple optical packets (MOPs). Firstly, a series of prerequisites were theoretically deduced with a single optical buffer loop performing all-optical TSI on MOPs. And the corresponding equations which experimental parameters should satisfy were derived from these prerequisites for different situation of all-optical TSI. Accounting to the theoretical results, a single optical buffer loop based on NPR in SOA experimentally implemented all-optical TSI on three packets and four packets at data rate of10G b/s with the circle length of410ns and429ns. In the first experiment, the actual lengths of the input optical packet queues are413ns and867.8ns, which are more than the length of the fiber delay ring. In the second experiment, the actual lengths of the input optical packet queues are893.8ns and894ns, which are more than the length of the fiber delay ring. Experimental results are in accordance with theoretical anticipation. These results will be very helpful to make all-optical TSI system more compact and higher efficient with less expensive elements such as SOA and develop the all-optical TSI technology.Based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), a single optical buffer loop has many advantages such as easy-to-read, compact, and it can be cascaded very well. The research can reduce the amount of the cost of SOA components, simplify optical buffer based on all-optical ring structure TSI system and provide a reliable basis for promoting the development of all-optical TSI technology.
