In the Bohai Sea Area, many offshore plantforms and other structues haveinstalled the conical ice-resistant structure during the tidal range due to the seaice force in winter. The reason to use the conical structure is that many currentreasearchs show that the ice force on the conical structure induced by icebending failure is far less than the ice force on the vertical structues whichderives from compression.Based on this fact, the research on ice bending failurehas become a significant subject in the ice engineering.Nowadays, the methods to investigate ice bending failue include field tests, model tests and numerical simulation. With the rapid development of computertechnology, numerical simulation has become an important assistant method inthis area. However, invetegators are still working hard to find out an efficient wayto simulate the ice bending failure process. In this paper, the numerical method and theory analysis are cobined to seekan efficient method for simulating the ice bending failure process and thefollowing works are developed:(1) Based on the sea ice physical and mechanical properties, investigate theexisting consitutive model and failure criterion of sea ice, discuss theones that fit the sea ice in flexual stress condition.(2) By using the LS-DYNA code to simulate a ring ice sheet bending failureand ice-cone interaction, propose a general tactical method to modifysea ice bending failue criterion.(3) Use the tatical method proposed above to modify Derradji’s failurecriterian which is based on the tiaxial compression tests in order to makethe failure criterion fits the ice bending failure process. The reasearch in this paper indicates that, due to the complexity of icebending process, the current numerical simulation results need to be workedon further. And the modified failure criterion based on the Derradji’s workcan simulate the ice bending failure in some degree, but still needs to beimproved.
