The physical mechanism of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is illustrated in this paper. According to the mechanism, we have developed a proper structure, which can support SPPs. We may deducation the disperation equation based on the Maxwell equation, which can help us to develop many SPPs strutures. Drude mdel and Lorenz model are the two important disperation euqations. In this paper, we will all take the Drude model. And, the Lorenz model also gives a good discription of disperation relationship. Based on the disperation relation of the SPPs, SPPs prossess many amazing properties, such as, Local field enhancement effect and Anomalous transmission effect. The unusual properties make SPPs widely used in ultra high resolution nano lithography technology, urface plasmon waveguide, Surface enhanced Raman scattering, Optical antenna.The ordinary SPPs waveguides are illustrated in the paper in later, and we also give an brief illustration of the waveguides including periodic arrays, circles, rectangles, T and complex constructions. The periodic array waveguide, which is an improvement of T. W. Ebbesen’s article in Nature, show good filter performance, but as the large size usually reach hundreds of nanometers, which can hardly satisfy highly integrated. Cirlces, rectangles, T and multimode coupled cavity have got broad study for their dozens of nanometers.Microwave theory is introduced in the later. We combine the microwave theory and SPPs and give a quantitative analysis for the waveguide based on metal-dilectric-metal (MIM) structrue. Based on the theory, we firstly develop a good model for the branch-buffer coupled cavity. Microwave theory is an important branch of the classical electromagnetic theory. Based on the Maxwell equation, usually we may get a strict physical interpretation. The analytical solution may resolve with rectangular cavities, circles, many symmetric structures and coupled cavities. As SPPs is some form of electromagnetic wave and the transverse mode is the mainly part in the MIM waveguide with longitudinal mode suppressed for small structures. So, the good combination of microwave theory and SPPs is an important tool in studying SPPs.
