With the high-speed developing of technology, the need of oil is continuous increasing. And as a result of years of mining, the reserve of onshore oil is declining. So it is of great importance to explore and develop offshore oil resource. The quantity of oil resource is huge in China sea, especially in the South China Sea. Heavy duty winch is a kind of high-technology equipment, which is used for engineering vessel positioning. It is an important equipment in offshore operation. The market of heavy duty winch is mainly occupied by Japan, South Korea and west counties. Now the heavy duty winch of our country mainly relies on import while the demand is very huge. It has weakened the cost advantage of marine equipment greatly. Now the mood of designing heavy duty winch in our country, most remain in the stage of imitation and analogy, which cannot meet the need of heavy duty winch design. So to research a new method of designing is becoming more and more important.The paper studied the optimization design based on finite element method. With the help of 3d graphics software, finite element software and fatigue life software to develop the method of heavy duty winch designing. And the author followed the engineering ship recording the loading while actual working. Then combining computer analysis and practice, and apply it in main component’s fatigue life analysis. With the method of designing, the company can reduce the cost and shorten the manufacturing time. It will greatly improve the efficiency and bring a lot of benefits.The paper takes a 100 t winch as an example, modeling the drum and the pinion shaft in 3d graphic software. Then analyze them in finite element analysis software to analyze the static stress. Then make the load spectrum with the records from the actual working in the method of rain flow count. Then import the result of static stress analysis and the load spectrum in fatigue life software to get the result of the life of the pinion shaft.
