Carbonate reservoirs play a significant role in the globe oil and gas production, and the carbonate reservoir located in Tazhong area is defined as a complicated reservoir which is of extensive fractures and holes. As China’s strategic shift in oil and gas exploration, the researchers attach more importance to this field. As a kind of chemistry, the carbonate rock is easy to dissolve and unstable. Thus, it is extremely influenced during diagenesis stages by physical, chemical and biological function, and eventually make its pore type is quite complicated. As we know, pore, cave and crack can be the effective reservoir space. Generally, the most primary pores were easy to be filled, while the latter dissolution mainly occurred along the tectonic fractures or the residual porosity. In addition, the cracks are the main percolation passage for oil and gas, and serve as reservoir space itself. Consequently, fractures for carbonate reservoir are extremely important.Tazhong area is affected by multi-period tectonic process and of complex fracture system, and develops several large-scale unconformities. In the sedimentary record, the Cambrian and Ordovician are mainly composed of dolomite and limestone.Mechanics experiments and statistics show that carbonate rocks are more brittle than other types of rocks, while dolomite more fragile than limestone under certain stress.Although there are many methods for the research of fractures, the precise and credible prediction remains a worldwide problem. In order to characterize and predict the fractures, petroleum geologists usually follow the procedures: Primarily, careful and direct observation of cores and outcrop is necessary as well as systematic statistics; Secondly, gather invisible information underground by using seismic and logging data. Ultimately, establish the proper model based on the analysis of the first-hand data and make a robust prediction to the reservoir fractures. This paper focus on characterization and prediction of reservoir fractures in Tazhong rea. At first,we did a lot of analytic work, perform a series of experiments and interpreted the 3D seismic data in Katake Ⅰ Area. Based on previous research, we tried two different ways by using 3D seismic data to identify and predict reservoirs in this area. One ofwhich is a comprehensive analysis of seismic attributes and visualization technology, through the intersection of multiple optimization seismic parameters to achieve more reliable results; the other is to set up the relationship between lithologic parameters(elastic modulus, poisson’s ratio, density, etc.) and the seismic parameters(seismic velocity), then we can accurately predict the fractures integrate with the tectonic stress field.
