Study On Wang Pengfei’s Thought Of Science And Technology In Meteorology

Wang Pengfei (1920-2011)’s ancestral home is located in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, and he was born in Shanghai. During Wang’s lifetime, he took charge of the Department of Atmospheric Physics in Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, and made great achievements in the field of atmospheric physics, which include the cloud precipitation physics, artificial influence weather, and so on. At the same time, he also made breakthroughs in the field of meteorology history, which focuses on the study of Chinese ancient meteorological instruments and the compilation of climography. As the important inaugurator and founder of the Department of atmospheric physics in Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, Wang Pengfei made great contributions to the departmental and majors’establishment, disciplinary development, system and teaching staff construction, and student management, all of which helps cultivate numerous professional top talents to satisfy the requirements of meteorological development. In addition to the achievements in the fields of meteorological scientific research and education, Wang Pengfei also did lots of pioneering work in Chinese meteorological dictionary compilation, meteorological terminological unification and scientific popularization. Wang devoted all his intelligence to standardizing the meteorological terminological system, and increasing national scientific literacy.The long-term work experience of meteorological scientific research and education, the abundant life experience of untiringly struggling with the difficulties and hardships in turbulent times, and the disciplinary quality developed from the scientific practice under the guidance of his respected teacher, shaped Wang Pengfei’s unique innovative thinking model, and gradually formed his profound abundant thought of science and technology, thus providing him with theoretical guidance and reference for the meteorology-related practical work. The paper analyzes the specific content and actual utility of Wang Pengfei’s thought of scientific research and education to explore the theoretical attribute and modern value of his meteorological thought.In terms of research on meteorological science and technology, Wang Pengfei always views scientific practice as the foundation, and adheres to breaking through the existing theory as well as the traditional thinking model to innovate the research results, in order to guarantee their advancement and reliability. Besides, Wang pays much attention to the dynamic development of research thought and methods in both aspects of time span and geographical breadth, and emphasizes in research activity the importance of the concept "keeping pace with the times", and the research view characterized by "expertness in both Chinese and Western learning". In addition, based upon the consideration of the social attribute in meteorological science and technology, Wang Pengfei pointed out definitely that meteorological scientific research should proceed from the social service, and focus upon hot meteorological events to meet the social demands faithfully. In terms of meteorological education, as the former head of atmospheric physics department in Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, Wang Pengfei paid high attention to the disciplinary development and teaching management all the time, and made great efforts to promote the development of meteorological discipline system, and to enhance the construction of teaching staff in meteorology field. Besides, Wang Pengfei argued that we should view characterized education as main measure when cultivating the talents, and regard the enhancement of professional proficiency in meteorological industry as the fundamental objective. The series of thought and ideas not only direct Wang Pengfei how to make the meteorological practice, but also enlighten the professional staff to carry out the meteorological business and cultivate meteorological talents scientifically.
