The main work of this paper is to explore electromagnetic properties and manipulation methods for Magnetic Surface Polaritons(MSPs). Begining with Maxwell’s equations and with reference to traditional Surface Plasmon Polaritons(SPPs), we resolved electromagnetic field distribution of MSPs with and without coupling, and deduced important results including its formation mechanism, excitation and propagation conditions and the corresponding dispersion relations. In order to be more intuitive to show the electromagnetic characteristics of the MSPs,the distribution of electromagnetic field on the interface had been numerically simulated. By comparing some important parameters from the full wave simulations, and those analytical ones,we thus demonstrated the correctness of MSPs. For the possible realization of the magnetic materials, we first derived the Drude model from the perspective of the free electron resonance, which described the principle and result of electrical response of dielectric materials to electromagnetic fields, and then gave the dielectric constants of these materials. Based on the idea of metamaterials and the Effective Medium Theory, we achieved magnetic responses with artificial resonance unit to explore realization of negative-permeability-material, which provided material basis for MSPs. And finally, we tried to design a few representative functional devices based on MSPs, analyzed the relevant parameters of these devices, and provided specific and feasible method for the optimization of device performance through flexible design of MSPs.
