Structural optimization design covers many areas, such as civil, mechanical, aerospace and energy. Its effect on human’s life becomes more and more huge. A good optimization can make people seek more space for development and get more benefits with limited resources. In the engineering of structural design, support position optimization can be used in buildings, printed circuit boards, workpiece machining and so on. In fact, the optimization of support system is a topology optimization problem. Base on the theory of mathematics, the combinations are endless, because the layout of supports must be varied.The problem in this paper is to optimize the position of the support about beam or plate structure, in order to make the maximum absolute deflection of the structure minimize. Assume the supports only constrain the structure on the nodes of finite element model, and play a role on lateral displacement.In this paper, the problem of structure optimization is studied using a heuristic optimization method, called evolutionary shift method, in the beam structure, truss structure and board structure. The mathematical model about support position optimization is established. The structural deflection sensitivity about the position of support is obtained. On the basis of sensitivity analysis and the model of finite element of structure, the value that maximum absolute deflection of the structure is reduced the most in every iteration process. Some simple examples are given to validate the correctness of the method. Base on this, the influence of various parameters on optimal support location and the maximum absolute deflection is discussed through some examples.
