With development of lunar programs, understanding the topography of lunar surface is becoming critical for space activities. Thus, it would be particularly helpful to produce a lunar model that can demonstrate the sophisticated features of the Moon. This thesis focuses on designing and producing a moon model with selenographic features, according to analyze the lunar surface and 3D printing process. The main research contents and results are as follows:(1)It analyzes the Free Form system.Study the Free Form system which is the most popular design system using touch. And the works of "Operation and use of the haptic design system-Free Form" has been wrote and published for this research.(2)It describes the modeling process of the Moon based on Free Form. Design the lunar bump model by Free Form. Develop three segmentation methods to break up the 3D Moon model, for example flat block method, flat bisection method, latitude and longitude lines method. Compare the differences of these three methods.(3)It removes errors from 3D model. Propose the image resampling method to change the resolution of the 2D Moon image to reduce errors.(4)It processes slices of the 3D Moon model. Apply automatic and manual methods to add printing supports for the 3D Moon model.Use the Maker Bot software to slice every segmentation module sequentially and generate printable files.(5)It makes the lunar model with 3D printing. Print out segmentation modules individually using the Creator-X 3D printer. Grind and smooth these printed modules to assemble the lunar model in a diameter of about 70 centimeters.Through all above studies, this paper creates a lunar model with the same surface topography as the real Moon, whose size is 1/5 000 000 of the Moon. This Moon model is expected to provide terrain help for space exploration or teleoperation to reduce risk of lunar exploration and reflect a certain reference value in teaching field.
