Oil shale has become an important energy to replace oil and gas in the future. In the age facing the urgent shortage of energy and resources, especially for us in China, oil shale has drew great attention worldwide with its massive potential of all-around application, as a result of which, the trend that the whole world is developing oil shale has now reached the very climax in history.Liushuhe Basin and Ningan Basin both belong to small-sized rift-faulted basin, typical of shale oil in Chinese Paleogene. By an integrative assistance of sedimentary facies, palaeoclimate, palaeosalinity, petrologic studies and so on,, the paper will make a systematic and thorough study of petrologic features of oil shale, generation theories as well as the generation systems of the two Basins. In this way, the paper offers a clear picture of depositional environment. It is key to study the depositional environment in the above two Basins as different depositional environments determine the distribution scale, thickness, layer number, organic matter abundance and type characteristics of the oil shale. The basic characteristics oil shale and sequence stratigraphy in Liushuhe Basin and Ningan Basin is deeply studied in detail in this paper. In the respec of the basic characteristics, firstly, the paper analyses the aspects such as colors, bedding stratification as well as the mineral composition of the oil shale in the two mentioned basins. Secondly, it studies types, abundance of organic matters and features of rock pyrolysis and etc. Thirdly, it makes a thorough research on the major, trace elements and rare earth elements. As for sequence stratigraphy, it establishes sequence stratigraphic framework in the interpretation on sedimentary facies and sedimentary subfacies.Above studies show that the organic matter types in Yi-shu Graben and Liushuhe Basin are mainly a mixed type (separately saprohumolith and humosapropelic types). It has come to a conclusion that the generation environment of the above two basins is limnetic facies with a rich reserve of organic matter and a high content of oil potential in oil shale.
