Hazy weather with long duration appears more and more frequently in recent years, which not only affects people’s outdoor activities and health, but also shows that fineparticles pollution has become a prominent atmospheric environmental problem in China. In order to solve this problem, wet electrostatic precipitator (WESP) to collect PM2.5isproposed in the paper. Based on the theory of removal process of fine particles by WESP,corona discharge performance of different polarity types was studied. The purpose is tofind the most optimal polarity type by which fine particles can be efficiently removed.A large number of tries on performance of corona discharge in WESP have beencarried out, and the influence of wind speed in electric field and the amount of sprayingwater on V-I characteristics is got from the test. Results show that the V-I curve tendsdownward with the wind speed increasing, and the ideal effect of corona discharge isobtained when the wind speed is1.0~1.2m/s. At a certain wind speed, the V-I curve tendsupward with the amount of spraying water adding, which indicates that spraying water haslittle effect on onset corona voltage, but the spark discharge voltage tends upward and thendownward with the spraying water adding. The WESP can operate better when the nozzlepressure is in the range of0.3~0.4MPa.The collection efficiency of three different polarity types has been tested, it isconcluded that collection efficiency of WESP is higher than dry ESP under the sameexperimental conditions. What’s more, the collection efficiency of the RS tubular barbedwire is higher than the fishbone wire, which is higher than the star line too.The experiments above show that fine particles can be effectively removed by WESP,and the removal efficiency is more than90%. The optimal combination is RS tubularbarbed wire with480C plate. Using WESP to collect PM2.5opens up a new way to reduceatmospheric pollutants from coal-fired boiler.
