Silica gel matting agents are widely used within the coatings industry for mattingpurposes and are regarded as highly efficient producing the type of surface roughnessthat is responsible for the appearance of meatiness. In this paper, it was learned about the theory of matting and producing process.Silica matting agent could decrease gloss of the coating film. The effects of the glossincluding matting agent contents on surface roughness of the coating film and storagetime of liquid coating were studied.Testing results indicated it was highly linear correlation between the mattingagent component of hydroxyl functional acrylic resin coating and the declining of thegloss in a certain range. The results showed that the particle of silica was boundedwith resin and well dispersed in lower percent status. During this step, we studied theproperties of coating gloss. In higher percent status, it caused the coating viscosityhigher. So the liquidity became worse which caused the corrugated film. The gloss offilm was deceased by the light scattering. When the silica powder reached a certaincontent, gloss of film changed little. During dispersing, the particle became little andthe impact probability was increased between silica particles. The small particles arefilled into the gap between large particles. The proper matting content gave strongeffect on the film gloss. During this step, the declining of the gloss is affected by thestructure of the resin and the particle cumulative settlement. But the film roughnessincreased in all the process. Based on the testing data, we can see that there is mathequation which could give expression to the relation of film gloss and film roughness. After coating product was stored for a long time, the gloss was higher thanbefore. It is caused by re-dispersing the coating because the accumulative particleswere re-dispersed to the small particles. These data studied will give guidance during development and adjustingproduction of coating.
