Fiber reinforced metal laminates are interply hybrid composites consisting of alternating layersof titanium sheets and prepreg, such that the superior fatigue and fracture properties associated withfiber-reinforced composite may be combined with the plastic behaviour offered by the titanium.Plenty of merits the FMLs have: high specific strength, excellent damage tolerance to fatigue crackgrowth, better impact and corrosion resistance, etc. Compared with thermoset FMLs, the processingof thermoplastic ones are faster, involving no cure, and are environmental friendly since it does notuse solvents. As the low surface energy of thermoplastic adhesive, there is a poor performance duringthermal forming the TA2/Cf/PEEK which is a new kind of thermoplastic laminate. In order to enhancethe laminate mechanical properties, surface treatment to titanium is necessary to tune the surface toget better bonding strength between titanium and PEEK.Sodium hydroxide-based solution anodizing and grit blasting were applied as the titaniumsurface treatment methods with the optimized parameters. The purpose of this paper was to improvethe bonding strength between titanium and PEEK, evaluating the effects of different surfacetreatments in terms of surface morphology, roughness, free energy. Investigation of interlaminarfracture toughness and shear strength were conducted to characterize the bonding strength as theforms of Energy and Force. Results are as follows:①No transfomation of the crystal structure of TiO2film was appear afterthe surface treatments;②Random-shaped nano-sized bumps distributed uniformly on the titaniumsurface after anodizing, and the bump diameter was between100and200nm. Using alumina gritexhibited a large amount of macro roughness about Ra1.58μm whereas the anodizing one was1.34μm.③The single lap joint shear strength of andized and grit blasted samples were both about19MPa. The model I interlaminar toughness (GIC) of TA2/PEEK interface which is prepared by themethod of NaTESi anodization is188.1N/m and the method combied with grit blasted was274.5N/mincreasing196.4%comparing with the normal ones.
