Hypoid gear is widely used in drive system of the car, ship and mining equipment,because of smoothness in transmission and high carrying capacity. traditional cradle-style machine is the main equipment in machining Hypoid gear at present. However,mechanical machine tool can’t meet the development requirement of moderntransmission system due to boring adjustment and low work efficiency. The CNCcutting machine provide renewed energy for helical bevel gear. The CNC machine hasthe advantage of simple mechanism and good rigidity. The homemade4-axis CNCcutting machine is widely used in our country. The machine is only used in themanufacturing of spiral bevel gear, because of the lack of theory. To solve this problem,this paper investigates the HFM machining method. The main research contents wereas follows:1Based on the local synthesis method, the procedure of HFM has been written.The mathematical model of format cutting, modified roll was set up. Gear principaldirections and curvatures were received on the basis of space coordinate transform.Pinion principal directions and curvatures were also received by surface point contactand local synthesis. In the end, HFM machining parameters were obtained on thebasis of surface line contact and local synthesis.2The procedure of tooth contact analysis(TCA) and tooth surface deviation havebeen done. We can get good machining parameters in combination with of toothcontact analysis. The influence of second order ratio of roll and third order ratio of rollto contact pattern and transmission errors was deeply analyzed.3The coordinate relations between machining coordinates of4-axis CNC cuttingmachine and theoretical coordinate systems have been set up. The time of start andfinish on the machine was finded. At last, the numerical control linear axes movementexpression was gained. 4Hypoid gear machining experiments on4-axis CNC cutting machine have beenfinished. The experiment was finished on YK2260X. With0.25degree as numericalcontrol axes movement step, machined tooth surface was smooth, and tooth surfacecontact was well. The experiment results showed that numerical control axesmovement expression was correct.
